Why do People Hate Vegans? 3 Common Complaints From Non-Vegans

People love to complain about how unpleasant vegans are. Saving animals, the environment, and creating a healthy future all sound like worthy goals. So, why do people hate vegans so much? There is a term been used to describe hostility aimed against vegans, called “vegaphobia“. According to a study, only drug addicts generate the same level of contempt.

What is vegaphopia?

So, what’s driving the vegaphobia? There are many factors at play, and it’s important to note that there are some ethical vegans in the world who are aggressive and preachy. Some use shaming tactics and have no interest in the courteous conversation.

Vegans who demonstrate this sort of behavior can do a disservice to everyone else by making people angry or resentful. But this is not a behavior that is unique to vegans — plenty of people get preachy about their beliefs (religion, politics, sports teams, etc.).

Before I was vegan, I would often roll my eyes at vegans, and I had a whole laundry list of reasons for doing so. At the top of my list was the belief that vegans were self-righteous, preachy, and pushy.

This is not a scientific analysis of why people hate vegans. I’m not a psychologist, but I have spent years trying to understand and improve relationships with non-vegans.

I’ve also spent hundreds of hours online listening to people bash vegans. And there are many, many reasons why people hate vegans.

Reasons why do people hate vegans

The vegan lifestyle has gone mainstream in recent years. More people than ever are ditching animal products and going 100% vegan. However, not everyone is happy with this trend, and some people have become increasingly hostile toward vegans.

Here are some of the more common complaints about vegans.

Vegans are judgmental

In studies, self-identified vegans were shown to be more judgmental of others than self-identified meat-eaters. This may be because vegans have to deal with such a constant barrage of judgment (and hostility) from others that they become judgmental as a defense mechanism.

There’s a lot of misinformation out there about vegans and veganism. People often assume that we’re all militant animal rights activists who are out to make their lives miserable. But the truth is, most of us are just regular people who have chosen to live a vegan lifestyle for personal reasons.

Vegans are arrogant and narcissistic

Vegans often talk about how they love animals and care about the environment. This can come across as arrogant and narcissistic because it makes it seem like they are better than everyone else — which isn’t the case at all!

Some people hate vegans because they’re insecure about their own choices. They know that eating animal products is harmful to their health, the environment, and animals, but they’re not ready to make the switch to a vegan lifestyle themselves. So instead of admitting that they might be wrong, they lash out at us.

Vegans are weird

Many non-vegans think that it is weird or strange to be vegan, especially when it comes to their diet choices such as avoiding dairy products or eating tofu instead of meat. The truth is that these types of foods are not a part of the traditional diet of many people, so they are reluctant to even try them.

Unfortunately, there are some people who simply don’t like vegans because they’ve been conditioned to believe that meat is the only way to go. They grew up being told that we’re weak and malnourished, and that vegan food is gross. As a result, they’ve never even bothered to learn more about veganism or try any of our delicious food.

why do people hate vegans hand sign to stop the hate

Whatever the reason, there seems to be a lot of hate towards vegans these days. There are a lot of stereotypes and misconceptions about vegans out there. Some people think that we’re all tree-hugging hippies who are constantly preaching about how meat is murder. Others believe that we’re weak and malnourished, or that we’re just doing it for attention.

Many people who dislike vegans are performing a mental exercise called “projection.” Instead of acknowledging their tendency to be hostile, they imagine that every vegan they meet is also hostile. Some people hate vegans because they are threatened by the idea that veganism might be right. If you have spent your life eating meat, it can be difficult to admit that you were wrong.

Key takeaways – Why do people hate vegans?

These are just a few of the possible answers to “why do people hate vegans” question. But whatever the reason, it’s important to remember that hatred towards any group of people is never acceptable. We all have a right to live our lives the way we see fit, and no one has the right to tell us otherwise.

Unfortunately, vegaphobia is a real thing and it can sometimes be difficult when trying to enjoy a meal at a non-vegan establishment. Often, vegans encounter open hostility from friends and family members. It can be hard to live a vegan life, but it gets easier if we try to understand why there are so many people hostile toward vegans.

Hi, I’m Petra and for most of my life, I was an omnivore. A vegan couple made me curious about veganism, so I did some research. What I found out about the animals, our planet, and the health benefits of a vegan diet made me go vegan overnight. It’s been 5 years now and it’s been one of the best decisions of my life.
