There’s no doubt that vegan meat is becoming more and more popular. But one question that a lot of people seem to be asking is why is vegan meat more expensive than regular meat. Being vegan for more than 5 years now, I tried every meat replacement that I could take my hands on. And some are really expensive. It’s frustrating for a vegan to see that meat is so much cheaper sometimes. After some research, I found out the real reason why is vegan meat more expensive than animal meat.

Why is vegan meat more expensive than regular meat?

There are several reasons why is vegan meat more expensive than regular meat. First, sometimes they make vegan meat using organic ingredients which are more typically expensive. The next reason is, that the vegan meat market is rapidly growing, but it’s still a small market compared to regular meat. And lastly, the animal meat market receives billions of dollars of government subsidies, so they can lower its prices.

Reason #1: Sometimes vegan meat is made of organic ingredients

One of the main reasons vegan meat is more expensive than regular meat is that it is often made with higher quality ingredients. For example, vegan meat is often made with organic soybeans or other plant-based proteins which can be more costly than conventional grains or soybeans.

In addition, vegan meat products often contain added vitamins and minerals that are not found in regular meat. These extra ingredients can also add to the cost of vegan meat.

Reason #2: A small (but rapidly growing) market

The vegan meat market is still in its early stages, so there aren’t the same economies of scale at work. Companies are spending a lot of money on research and development right now. As they figure out the ideal recipes for their products, they can renegotiate their deals with ingredients suppliers and can lower their prices.

According to a report from the Good Food Institute, the price of Impossible Foods’ ground beef has fallen two times to today’s $9.32/lb price. As more companies enter the market and production increases, we can expect prices to continue to fall.

The vegan meat market is currently worth around $1 billion but it’s a fraction compared to the size of the animal meat market. As more and more people adopt plant-based diets, the demand for vegan meat will continue to grow.

And as the demand grows, so will the number of companies producing vegan meat. With more competition, prices are sure to drop.

Reason #4: Meat subsidies

Vegan meat is more expensive also because animal meat is subsidized. The government pays farmers to produce animals for food, which in turn keeps the price of meat lower than it would be otherwise. When you factor in the cost of raising and slaughtering animals, the real price of meat is much higher than what we pay at the grocery store.

The United States spends millions of dollars subsidizing the meat industry every year. In fact, animal meat is one of the most heavily subsidized commodities in the country. The government provides these subsidies to help keep the prices of meat low and to encourage farmers to produce more.

However, many people are unaware of how much the government is subsidizing the meat industry. In 2013, the United States spent $38 billion subsidizing the production of animal meat. That’s more than the government spent on subsidizing any other industry!

It employs thousands of people and generates billions of dollars in revenue every year. Second, the government wants to keep the prices of meat low so that people can afford to eat it.

Next time you’re wondering why vegan meat is so pricey, remember that it’s not just the cost of production that’s driving up the price. It’s also the fact that animal agriculture is heavily subsidized by taxpayers.

If we want to see more affordable vegan meat, we need to level the playing field by ending these subsidies. Only then will plant-based proteins be able to compete on a fair playing field.

Meat production will be unsustainable by 2050 at current and projected rates of consumption due to high resource intensity and destructive cost. This opens a large market for nutritious protein alternatives which can provide comparable taste, texture, and nutrition density.

Some people may wonder why someone would want to eat vegan meat. After all, doesn’t eat plants make you a vegan? Some vegans like to eat meat replacements and some don’t like them.

The ones that like them, usually didn’t go vegan because of health reasons or because they didn’t like the taste of meat. They went vegan because of ethical reasons. They probably like the taste of meat so they search for meat replacements that are suitable for vegans.

Types of vegan meat

There are four types of vegan meats that vegans can enjoy:

  1. First, are store-bought vegan meat replacements made out of plant-based ingredients (Beyond meat, Gardein, Juicy Marbles, etc.)
  2. Then there’s cultured meat, which is animal meat but grown in a lab. 
  3. Next, there are some foods that are often used as meat replacements such as seitan, tofu, and tempeh.
  4. And lastly, there is vegan meat we can make at home.

Vegan meat #1: Store-bought vegan meat

Beyond Meat is a company that makes plant-based meat products. The products are made from pea protein, rice protein, and soy protein. The company has been praised for its environmental impact, as plant-based meat products require less water and land than animal-based meat products. 

Beyond Meat has also been lauded for its health benefits, as plant-based meat products are lower in saturated fat and cholesterol than animal-based meat products.

Critics of Beyond Meat have noted that the company’s products are more expensive than animal-based meat products and that they may not be as healthy as advertised.

Vegan meat #2: Cultured meat

Cultured meat is a type of meat that is made by growing animal cells in a lab, instead of from slaughtered animals. It is also sometimes called clean meat, lab-grown meat, or cell-based meat. 

The first cultured beef hamburger was created by Mark Post in 2013. Since then, there have been many advances in the technology used to create cultured meat. 

One of the benefits of cultured meat is that it does not require animals to be raised in inhumane conditions and later slaughtered. This could potentially reduce the amount of animal suffering in the world.

Cultured meat also has a smaller environmental footprint than traditional meat. This is because it requires less land and water to produce. 

It is important to note that cultured meat is not currently available for purchase. However, it is expected that it will be commercially available within the next few years.

Vegan meat #3: Seitan, tofu, and tempeh

Some popular vegan meat replacements are seitan, tofu, and tempeh. Seitan is made of wheat gluten and is often used as a replacement for steak or other hearty meats. Tofu is made from soybean curds and can be used in place of chicken or fish in many recipes. Tempeh is also made from soybeans, but it is fermented and has a firmer texture.

Vegan meat #4: Homemade vegan meat recipe 

Making your own vegan meat replacement patties is really easy, and it’s a great way to make sure you know exactly what’s going into your food. Plus, they taste amazing! Here’s how to make them:

  1. First, start with some cooked rice. You’ll need about two cups. Add in one cup of cooked lentils, and mix everything.
  2. Next, add some chopped vegetables. I like to use mushrooms, onions, and carrots, but you can use whatever you like. Just make sure they’re all chopped up into small pieces.
  3. Now it’s time to add the spices. I like to use a combination of garlic powder, paprika, and chili powder, but you can use whatever spices you like. Just add them in until everything tastes good to you.
  4. Once the spices are all mixed in, it’s time to form the patties. I like to make them about half an inch thick, but you can make them whatever size you like. Just make sure they’re all the same size so they cook evenly.
  5. To cook them, just heat some oil in a pan over medium heat, and cook them for about five minutes per side, or until they’re nice and browned. Serve with your favorite toppings and enjoy!
