With more people adopting this earth-friendly lifestyle, there are many questions about what vegans can eat. Some can’t think of anything that vegans could eat, so they assume we eat grass. How about pasta? Can vegans eat pasta? The answer is yes, vegans can eat most store-bought bread and pasta.
Eating vegan doesn’t have to equal deprivation, and eating pasta is a good example of that. Pasta is one of the most loved dishes worldwide. It gives great comfort and satisfaction. And thankfully, vegans can eat it too! Most store-bought pasta – from spaghetti to lasagna noodles – is 100 percent vegan.
There’s one exception to this rule: Egg noodles. While most pasta is made using wheat and water, egg noodles contain – you guessed it! – eggs. If you want to ensure your pasta is vegan-friendly, purchase one that’s explicitly labeled as such or check the ingredients list for eggs. Even though traditional pasta is vegan, some packaged brands use eggs as an ingredient.
How is pasta made?
Pasta is usually made by combining milled wheat, and water. Occasionally other ingredients are added, like eggs. The dough is rolled flat, cut into the desired shape, and dried at a low temperature.
Dry pasta comes in many different shapes and varieties, each with a particular use in cooking. The most common are long pasta, like spaghetti or linguine; short pasta such as penne and rigatoni; filled pasta such as ravioli; tiny pasta is known as pastina; and shaped pasta like farfalle (known as bow-tie pasta).

If you are vegan or want to try new recipes, this one is perfect for you. I usually cook around 110 grams of pasta per person. This recipe will serve 2 people (or 1 hungry person).
- 250g pasta
- 1 can of diced tomatoes
- 1 can of beans
- 0,5 of an onion
- salt and pepper to taste
Start by cooking the pasta according to the instructions on the package. When it’s ready, drain the water and set it aside.
In a pan on medium heat, add some oil and sauté the onion. Add the diced tomatoes and beans, then cook until they are warm through. Add salt and pepper to taste. Finally, mix with the pasta and serve!
Pasta with tomato sauce and beans is a very easy recipe to adjust to what you have in your fridge and pantry. If you don’t have all of these ingredients on hand, that’s no problem! You can leave out the beans or the onions. Or you can use other veggies like zucchini or bell peppers instead.
You can also add other spices to the sauce to give it a different flavor. Cumin and coriander are nice to try if you like Mediterranean flavors. A pinch of chili powder or red pepper flakes gives it a kick. And feel free to add salt and pepper to taste.
